Constant enough : On the kinds of perceptual constancy worth having

چکیده
The idea is proposed that whereas perceptual experience is underconstant in one sense, it is virtually constant insofar as it is functionally stable and predictable. The possibility of distinguishing perception and cognition is explored in experiments on the perception of surface orientation. These experiments are related to the study of selfmotion perception and space perception. An experiment comparing monocular and binocular perception of hills, revealed perceptual differences, between-subjects, that were masked in within-subject comparisons by metacognitive strategies. A second experiment found that participants wearing heavy backpacks gave (cognitively) elevated slope estimates only because of experimental demands not physical ones. Perceptual experience is informative about perceptual processing, but reports of experience are subject to cognitive contamination. True perceptual experience may be virtually constant insofar as the perceptual consequences of actions can be correctly anticipated. Constant enough Durgin, Ruff, and Russell 2

Constancy, Categories and Bayes:
Philosophers have long sought to explain perceptual constancy—the fact that objects appear to remain the same color, size and shape despite changes in the illumination condition, perspective and the relative distance—in terms of a mechanism that actively categorizes variable stimuli under the same pre-formed conceptual categories. Contemporary representationalists, on the other hand, explain pe...
متن کاملVisual Constancy during Movement. 1. Effects of S's Forward and Backward Movement on Size Constancy.
-A novel method for estimating constancy is described, which is applied to the estimation of size constancy during motion of observers moved passively on a swing in darkness. Ss viewed a circle traced on an oscilloscope tube and arranged to shrink as S approached it and to expand as he moved away. The variation in size of the display was adjusted by E until it appeared of constant size to S dur...

Our visual system can easily estimate the constant color and material of external objects despite dynamic changes in the retinal image across viewpoints and illuminations in natural scenes. It is commonly believed that this high-level visual function, called "perceptual constancy," is acquired through postnatal learning [1], building upon low-level functions that have developed earlier, such as...
متن کاملEffects of similarity on apparent motion and perceptual grouping.
Effects of similarity in colour, luminance, size, and shape on apparent motion and perceptual grouping were examined in part 1 in two parallel experiments on the same seven subjects. In both experiments, the effect of similarity was compared with that of proximity in competitive, bistable stimulus situations. A combination of a larger horizontal separation between the homogeneous stimulus eleme...
متن کاملRethinking Colour Constancy
Colour constancy needs to be reconsidered in light of the limits imposed by metamer mismatching. Metamer mismatching refers to the fact that two objects reflecting metameric light under one illumination may reflect non-metameric light under a second; so two objects appearing as having the same colour under one illuminant can appear as having different colours under a second. Yet since Helmholtz...
